Final Poster

My final design celebrating the anniversary of GF SMITH. I've used a black and neon white colour scheme this gave me great shadows coming from the type and making the design very vibrant. So happy 100th anniversary GF SMITH.

Final poster Develpoment

After choosing the design layout / position in which I was happy with I took the images into a C.A.D program where I edited the images. By doing this I could get a better concept of how my poster will look. To capture the essence of the anniversary of GF SMITH i made my design out of paper and make the type out of paper which is the actual design. I explained earlier the concept which I was looking for once I researched artist which related to the thoughts I had. The basic idea was that I wanted the type and design to be all one and not look like there are two images just over laid. My design I have achieved this, by playing with the background, lighting and shadows showing through the type therefore the whole design looks complete and all the elements of the design work all together and doesn't look disjointed between the layers used through the design process.

The use of lighting in the designs really works to my favour it adds great depth to the image and make it more clearly stand out as a 3d design.
I edited this image on the computer by putting a blue filter over the top of it the slight white and blue adds a good contrast between the colours.
All these designs I like but I don't reckon they would stand alone as my final. the colours don't really capture the tones I wished for.

Finding the right shot for the final design

This is my final design for the poster to celebrate the 100th anniversary of GF SMITH. I'm trying to find the right position in which I want the final image to look. The design I have done was made from a piece of a3 paper and I displayed the text on the page by drawing light pencil outlines until I was happy with the layout. Once I was happy with how the txt was looking I started to cut into the txt and raised some letters. My method for this was for none of the text which is stood up not to be blocked by the next row of letters which would be raised so for me to do this there is some letters just cut out. The use of negative space really works and is set in a very 'Art Deco' feel with the contrasting background. This gives the design a very hand crafted feel and look.

As you can see here the wooden background compliments the white paper and with the designed paper working with the background it gives off the vibe of hand made / crafted.
Taking a low level angle when shooting the photo made the design look bigger than it was, playing with this illusion was a good effect but because of the low angle not all the text was visible therefore couldn't be read properly.
Trying to get the low angle I wanted and so that the type can be read. Not exactly easy.
Trying different positions, seeing which best work with the look I want. The image above is of the designed piece of paper but flipped over. The type is clear in this design but it doesn't really have the 'wow factor'
Arching the design worked well but when cropping and editing the image on C.A.D program could be found to be a pain because the shape. I do like this design though the type is clear and the arch makes the design stand out more in capturing the 3D effect which I achieved in task 1 of the brief.
I will be taken a few of the positions of the design in to my further development to create my final design. I will edit the images on the computer and add effects etc which i think and feel would make the piece of paper I designed better.

Yulia Brodskaya

Another truly inspiring artist.  Yulia Brodskaya works with paper sculpting and mainly lettering and how it can be displayed. This was a relevant research of  an artist as I'm looking at how type can be displayed and the ways type on its own can display a design through paper. Her work is all one the type has a lot of flicks and twirls but it all comes fro the main body of the text in the designs.

The colours in the paper she chooses has great effect on the mood in which you interpret the design. for example the design above is in red which would normally be considered as danger but because the type says 'I love you' the colour red then relates to us as love for a person like roses given on valentines day etc. Plus with the twirls and flicks it has a soft feel instead of a hazardous look for being red.

Her work is beautiful her type really corresponds to the image behind it. Her work will inspire me to design in her meaningful way. Like I mentioned earlier the type and image are all one and don't look out of place as two separate designs. This is the method and technique which i wish to accomplish in my poster development.

Design Development / ideas

After looking at Ingrid Siliakus I have done some designs which were inspired by his work. I have used the type which I'm going to use in the poster design.

By cutting out letters out of paper and leaving some letters not fully cut out I visual creative design was achieved by my self. I put the design into a cylinder shape and took the photographs looking down through the middle.

Using the same paper design I created, but this time curving the paper up I could shoot the photo looking through the design. I used Macro setting so that some letters were in focus and others weren't. I think this gives a good effect as what is in focus is the main focal point and the other area of the image out of focus back up the rest of the background for the design.

Ingrid Siliakus

This artist I looked into has very creative ideas; he builds pop out like design from paper which looks like the design is coming out at you. His style of designing really interested me and related to what I was thinking before when I want my flat form of my paper to become 3D and become one with the type in which to celebrate GF SMITH. The negative space which has been cut out works really well with the background and it's really cleaver how the design is all intact. His work is very depth of detail and nothing on the paper has been wasted.

Great care and detailed applied to his work.
I want to try and achieve the same feeling which Ingrid Siliakus give me when i design towards my final poster design.

First ideas into the poster development

After doing some research and thinking about the task in hand I started rough designs using the paper techniques used in task 1.

Taking a piece of paper and cutting into a design which I drew on to the page. This gave me two designs, the out lined and the cut out which appears to be the centre piece. I liked how I did this because I kept the paper all connected so I made a stencil like design.
By placing the design on to a wooden oak background, creates an earthy feel and the white paper on the wood has great contrast between the two colours.
Other initial ideas into the poster development, cutting out letter and raising layers makes the design 3d which adds a lot more interest to the design as a 2D flat image can be rather boring which I have explained in task 1 so by lifting and manipulating the paper to become 3D it to life and gives it a personality.
The first stages into designing the ideas I had in my head down on paper and the tools required to do so.
These ideas will be taken into further development, mainly the raised idea of designing so that the poster which will be printed on to a 2D format it will appear 3d by the design I choose and create.

Vercnica and Isaac Salazar

This artist I came across when I was researching. After been giving task 2 I started to think about how the paper could display type. I didn't want to just have a sculpture like in task 1 and then just put type over the top of it as it wouldn't really work and the two bits of design (the image and text) wouldn't look together in a design and I want the type and paper to be all one and complete so that I can truly capture the essence of a 100th year anniversary of GF SMITH.

In Salazar's work they have folding pages in a book to create the lettering; I really like how this has been achieved and it really does become one as a design.

Task 2 - poster design for GF SMITH paper

Task 2 was given out in the brief. We basically have to create a poster celebrating the 100th anniversary of GF SMITH PAPER. We were told to use the methods and techniques used in task 1 to help us construct a design which will fit and work with the brief in hand. GF SMITH has been one of the main suppliers for paper to the graphics industry for a 100 years. I think creating a poster expressing this is a great idea to show them our appreciation.

The logo for GF SMITH lots of companies buy in bulk and the packaging it comes in is coated with there logo so you might have seen it jotted about.
The company is British and they are quite patriot about this as some of there designs include the Union jack flag just like above.
They do over 54 different colours of paper, so it gives you a lot of choice to pick from and various wieghts etc.

To make my poster celebrating GF smith I want it to be visually attractive and iconic by making it all out of paper and no added extras.

Final Sculpture

The final design for my 3d sculpture for task 1 ( repeated patterns and repetition) I have choose this as my final as it really shows off the curves and twists of the paper and it relates to architectural designs researched in my earlier work. I would just like to say thank you to Richard Sweeney with the help given and methods he gave us, he truly inspired me and he will go on to inspire others.

Stages before final sculpture

These are my final compositions and arrangements of the sculptures. The three images will be considered and took through to the final design.

Finding the right position for the final design

After looking At Sir Norman Fosters work I was able to find the right composition of my folded pleated paper. As it's clear below there is many elements of the sculpture which can relate to architecture.

I found the composition I wanted to use but finding the right angle and depth I wanted to take the final shot for the sculpture to be pushed forward to the 'Final Design'
A low angle made the sculpture look a lot bigger than it actually was but the only problem with this shot is the background doesn't compromise the design.
Using a light box like I before in my earlier development worked really well to produce light from underneath the design. This makes the design stand out more and again makes the sculpture look bigger. The problems with this though was that some areas on the sculpture didn't come out clear and too saturated for the camera to take focus on these areas.
Using a natural light source made the design seem more realistic therefore the white balance on the camera wasn't scaling out of control.
